Family Days Out in Birmingham

Who said that planning family days out in Birmingham is stressful? Not us!

Birmingham is packed to the brim (or should we say brum) with family-friendly attractions, museums, parks, and indoor options for when the rain strikes.

No matter how old your child or children are, there’s something for everyone. And, even better if you’re planning a weekend break, as the city works for families no matter the time of year.

In this guide, we walk you through some of the best days out in Birmingham for families. Pick from one, two, or multiple options to create an itinerary that works for you and family.

Top family attractions in Birmingham

Birmingham is home to a number of fantastic attractions that regularly feature on family itineraries.

Cadbury World is one of the best attractions we have to offer. It’s the obvious choice for a day out with family in Birmingham and is full of choclate-ly goodness to explore.

Learn about the history of the nation’s most-loved chocolate brand before visiting the exhibitions and tasting some delicious Cadbury’s chocolate.

One thing to note: be sure to book tickets in advance, especially during school holidays as this site is extremely popular and sells out quickly.

Another great family day out option is the National Sea Life Centre Birmingam. Here, the kids can walk through underwater tunnels, getting up close to sharks, rays, and other fish.

There’s also a range of wonderful exhibitions to explore and lots of learning opportunities. The Sea Life centre is a solid option for children of all ages.

We also are proud to be home to The Legoland Discovery Centre Birmingham, which is especially great for younger children.

You’ll find lots of creative play, indoor rides, building zones, and impressive Lego displays. Advanced booking is highly recommended since this attraction gets busy during weekends and half-term.

Indoor family days out

If the weather isn’t on your side, don’t worry. There’s still plenty of activities to enjoy in Birmingham for families!

Indoor play centres and activity venues are a sensible option, especially if your children are age 3 and under. These spaces provide safe areas to run, climb and play.

For older children, get yourself down to our local bowling alleys, trampoline parks or climbing centres, which are guaranteed to burn off some energy.

If you’re planning family days out in Birmingham during half term or a busy weekend, booking ahead is sensible and may even save you some money too.

Museums and hands-on learning

When it comes to our museum scene, Birmingham has a range of family-friendly options, with state of the art interactive exhibits.

Combine curiosity and learning at the Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum, which is by far one of the city’s most popular family attractions.

Children can explore hands-on science galleries, interactive experiments and engineering displays at their own pace. It’s a museum that’s best suited to school-age children, with enough to keep your child entertained for hours.

Another good option is the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which offers family-friendly displays and activities throughout the year. Inspire your child through some of the UK’s best artists and allow them to revel in creativity themselves.

Many museums in Birmingham do provide free entry to permanent collections, making them useful for budget-friendly days out.

Parks and outdoor days out

When the weather is on your side, Birmingham’s outdoor spaces provide some of the most relaxed family days out in the region. Our wonderful parks and gardens offer room for children to play, explore nature and enjoy a slower pace.

Cannon Hill Park is one of the city’s best known green spaces with many families often visiting for walks, playground time and picnics near the lake.

The wide paths and open lawns make it suitable for younger children who want space to run around.

Another popular choice is Lickey Hills Country Park, located just outside the city centre, which is a perfect location for a sunny picnic.

Family days out around Birmingham

If you have the extra time, or are visiting for a weekend, there are a number of excellent family days out around Birmingham to consider.

The West Midlands is proudly home to a range of National Trust properties offering gardens, historic houses and outdoor trails. Baddesley Clinton, for example, offers a moated manor house surrounded by parkland and walking routes. Families can explore the grounds before stopping at the cafe for a refreshment.

Another option is Packwood House, also managed by the National Trust. The property is known for its formal gardens and spacious grounds where children can enjoy outdoor exploration.

Be sure to check official opening times and entry fees ahead of time to avoid any surprises on arrival!

Quick planning tips

It goes without saying that a little bit of planning can make family days out in Birmingham much easier. Booking ahead is always recommended by us for popular attractions and you’ll find that many venues now operate timed entry tickets to manage visitor numbers.

It’s also useful to have an indoor backup if you are planning an outdoor day. The last thing you want is to be thinking of plans with kids in tow.
